SAC - School Advisory Council

Join our School Advisory Council (SAC)! One of the ways you can be more involved with our school is to join our SAC! Just complete and return the pink application that came home with your student or complete and return the attached application: SACElectionsform

What is SAC?

By law, every school in Florida must have a School Advisory Council (SAC). This council consists of teachers, support personnel, parents, and community members. Fifty-one percent (51%) of the council must be parents and/or community members not employed by the school.

Some of the things our members are involved with include deciding how to spend SAC funds to help meet the School Improvement Plan (SIP). Decide jointly with the school staff how to spend the Florida School Recognition (A+) funds if awarded by the state. Participate in efforts to encourage support for the goals and activities of the school, and to help prioritize and determine the needs of the school.

Any questions please reach out to our SAC Chairperson. Jenny Graham at jrgraham@volusia.k12.fl.us

Cell Phones

The district’s rule regarding cell phone usage on our school campus has changed. Students are still permitted to carry cell phones, however, they may not be used on the school campus and must remain turned off and out of view.

Best Practices in Education (BPIE) Assessment

Once every 3 years, each school in Florida completes a Best Practices in Inclusive Education ( BPIE) assessment with a Florida Inclusion Network ( FIN) facilitator. The school BPIE is a self-assessment process designed to identify priority needs, develop goals, plan school-wide improvement strategies, and organize internal and external resources to support the implementation of inclusive practices for students with disabilities. Our school BPIE team selected the following areas for growth over the next 3 years and will be action planning to accomplish these goals.

Indicators:

Indicator 3) School has a key person who coordinates and monitors the implementation of inclusive education.

Indicator 5) School data reflect that all students with disabilities (SWD) are educated in general education contexts 80% or more of the day.

Indicator 7) Administrators communicate expectations for all personnel to share responsibility for all students.

Indicator 9) Administrators communicate expectations for all personal to use first person language.

Indicator 28) General and Special Education teachers regularly plan instruction together.

Please reach out to Kelly Lewis at 386-424-2600 if you have any questions or would like to be a part of the action planning process.

We believe all young people deserve a chance to live healthier lives. But today in the United States, not all kids have the same opportunity for a healthy future.

In fact, nearly 1 in 3 children (ages 2-19) is overweight or obese, putting them at risk for serious health problems. Nearly 25 percent of children (ages 2-8) have a chronic health condition, including asthma, and only 1 out of 3 is physically active each day.

We know that a child’s health, both physical and emotional, influences his or her ability to succeed. That’s why we’re committed to ensuring that the places children learn, live, and play provide and promote good health.

Celebrations / Parties / Snacks

Please see your child’s teacher to make arrangements in advance if you would like to provide a treat.

When providing snacks, we request that they meet the USDA Smart Snack Policy. They should be nutritious and prepackaged unless they are fresh fruit. Items containing peanuts or other food that trigger allergies are not permitted in classrooms where peanut/food allergies exist. We value the health and wellness of our children and staff. A “snack” is a commercially pre-packaged, non-potentially hazardous, ready-to-eat food item. Food prepared in a private home shall not be used, sold or offered. [Ref. 64E-11.003(9)] Only pre-packaged foods and drinks that require no refrigeration for safe consumption are distributed to our students in the classroom.

Nutrition Requirements

  • Calorie limits: ≤ 200 calories
  • Sodium limits: ≤ 230mg
  • Fat limits: Total fat: ≤ 35% of calories; Saturated fat: < 10% of calories
  • Trans fat: zero grams
  • Sugar limit: ≤ 35% of weight from total sugars in food

We value our instructional time with students. The time allocated for parties is limited. Celebrations will be held after lunch on the picnic table or in the student’s classroom. Invitations to private parties should not be distributed at school or on the bus. Siblings are unable to attend, as this presents a liability for the school. Siblings/friends should not be taken from their classroom as this is a disruption in their academic learning. Thank you so much for your cooperation and understanding.
